Silicon carbide (SiC is a combination of silicon carbide and carbon. This compound semiconductor material has the properties of wide band gap with galium nitride, (GaN). It is also known as the “third generation” semiconductor material.
SiC features a large band gap which makes it very strong in terms of breakdown electricity field strength, and many other property. SiC power device have many benefits due to the SiC material characteristics, such as high voltage resistance, low power usage, and high temperature resistance.

SiC devices are used in electric drive systems to reduce their cost, size and weight. SiC can also used in the charging of electric vehicles, to reduce its volume and speed.
SiC-inverters are a great option for electric vehicles to increase their efficiency and prolong the battery’s life. SiC technology in an electric drive inverter has two advantages. On the one side, it reduces loss and increases efficiency. And on the second, it reduces overall cost. Reduce the weight and volume of the inverter. SiC can be used to reduce its chip area and working frequency. It is also able to save other peripheral components. SiC module volume will not exceed that of IGBT. SiC offers good heat dissipation.
SiC power electronics are increasingly being included in new vehicle models. Tesla adopted the full SiC power device in its Model 3 main Inverter. More and more manufactures are now releasing SiC models, including BYD (NIO), Xpeng (Mercedes), etc. SiC technology allows these cars to use smaller inverters with higher efficiency. The vehicle’s power can be increased, as it has faster charging speeds and longer endurance.
