Silica Aerogel is a type gel material that uses dispersed media as gas. It is a fixed nanoporous material, composed of polymer molecules or colloidal particles. The unique properties of the material make it an attractive choice for many applications.
Properties, uses and application of silicon aerogels
Due to its special network structure silicon aerogel exhibits exceptional thermal, optical, electric, mechanical and other properties. The product has wide application potential.
I Transparent insulation
Solar collectors use transparent SO2 Aerogels to insulate the heat. They are also suitable for insulation in cryogenic systems (e.g. refrigerators). This prevents the possibility of degrading the ozone layer.
It’s also lightest material, so it holds the Guinness-record for world lowest density. Silica aerogel can be prepared at laboratory temperature under atmospheric pressure to achieve a 13.4.3kgm 1/3 density. It makes the ideal space vehicle thermal insulation layer. NASA is using the same material to heat insulate the British Jaguar fighter. As an insulation layer, the “Mars Rover’ uses silicon aerogel to resist the extremely low temperature of Mars night below -100 degrees.
For insulation, additional metal was used in the SO2 aerogel. A framework material was polyimide. An aluminum film with porous SO2 aggels was applied to the aluminum foil, creating an insulation layer. You can get 5 times more heat insulation if the film is stackable up to 10 layers.
II. Application for Electricity
In solid materials, the dielectric constant for silicon aerogel can vary between 1-2 and very low levels. The very large-scale integrated Circuit (UISI), which is seeing increasing device integration, will use silicon aerogel to make the substrate materials for large-scale integrated Circuits (UISI). Researchers currently working on ULSI have investigated several low-dielectric materials.
3. Acoustic impedance coupling materials
SD2 aerogel produces a longitudinal sound propagation rate at 100 m/s. The SD2 aerogel’s acoustic impedance increases with increasing density. Because of this, it makes a great acoustic coupling material. You can decorate your floor with it, as well. Also, it can be used in acoustic delay and high-temperature sound insulation material. Transparent aerogels may also be used for insulation windows as well as solar insulation.
IV. Use of mechanical properties
Silicon aerogels can be compressedive, low-tensile or elastic. The aerogels’ mechanical properties can be enhanced by ageing, which will increase their shear and compressive coefficients by up to 23 times. These can be used as super dampers for kinetic-energy absorbing material. You can absorb a lot more energy when vibration compresses. Carbon aerogel and silicon aerogel both have low vibration impendence materials that can absorb frozen minerals up to 100 atmospheres.
